S3 Graphics Dives Back Into (DirectX 9.0) Display Arena
New DeltaChrome Core Aimed at Mobile and Desktop Graphics

Minor details such as shipping dates and prices are nowhere to be found, but it's still newsworthy that VIA subsidiary S3 Graphics Inc. has declared its intention to challenge ATI's and Nvidia's finest 3D accelerators for DirectX 9.0 supremacy -- or at least a serious share of the notebook and desktop graphics market.

The company has released selected info about a completely new display core named DeltaChrome, which will feature full hardware support for Microsoft's latest application interfaces and an integrated Hi-Def HDTV encoder supporting up to 1,080-line resolution (in progressive mode). The V8 eight-pixel pipeline promises a fill rate of 2.4 gigapixels per second, while Advanced Deferred Rendering maximizes the efficiency of the 3D engine and PicturePerfect hardware antialiasing fights jagged edges.

S3 adds that DeltaChrome's Chromotion programmable video engine replaces fixed-function video decoding and processing with sophisticated options such as post-processing to enhance streamed video for MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Windows Media, and other standards. The graphics core also supports DuoView dual-display output and eye candy ranging from real-time artistic-effects application to alpha-blended, colored cursors.
