Camera and Touch-Screen Interfaces Built In

Calling it “the world’s fastest mobile CPU” — if you mean “mobile” in the handheld rather than laptop sense, anyway — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has announced the S3C2440, a processor for PDAs and smart phones that runs at a clock speed of 533MHz (topping the 400MHz of Intel’s XScale core).

Based on an ARM920T core, the S3C2440 is an 0.13-micron, 16/32-bit RISC processor compatible with Microsoft Windows CE, Palm OS, Symbian, and Linux. It’s designed to reduce overall system costs by incorporating common system peripherals including camera and touch-screen interfaces, USB host and device, Secure Digital and MultiMedia Card flash with a built-in NAND flash boot loader, and both TFT and STN LCD display support.

Smsung says the low-power CPU is sampling now in 300MHz and 400MHz as well as 533MHz versions and will be in mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.
