Mass Production Next Spring

High-end servers are going to climb higher next year, as Elpida Memory Inc. has shipped samples of the industry’s first 2GB registered DDR2 memory modules.

Able to transfer data at 4.3GB/sec, the new PC2-4300 DIMMs contain 36 DDR2 chips holding 512 megabits each, mounted using Elpida’s unique stacking technology and supporting the error checking and correction necessary for enterprise server applications. The mighty modules also support 1.8V operation, thus offering a 50-percent power reduction over standard DDR at 400Mbps.

Elpida says its 0.11-micron process manufacturing technology produces high yields of DDR2 SDRAM devices, allowing stable mass production of 2GB sticks to be scheduled for the second quarter of 2004. The company also offers registered DDR2 modules in 512MB and 1GB densities.
