6- and 14-Watt Versions Available
AMD, which led Intel in moving away from clock-speed listings to relative performance ratings for desktop and notebook CPUs, is now doing the same for embedded processors. Its Geode x86 chips now carry Performance-Power Rating metrics based on benchmarks developed by Synchromesh Computing.
The newest processor in the line, designed for high-end thin clients, information kiosks, point-of-sale systems, and communications devices, is the AMD Geode NX 1500@6W. It operates at 1.0GHz, versus the 1.4GHz of the swifter Geode NX 1750@14W, and is more suited for fanless applications. Current Geode GX2 chips have been renamed according to the new ratings, with the Geode GX 533@1.1W (400MHz), GX 500@1.0W (366MHz), and GX 466@0.9W (333MHz).
