Hot-Rod RAM: Kingston and Crucial Bolster Performance Memory Lines
Lower Latencies, Aluminum Heat Spreaders

PC performance enthusiasts who demand the fastest available system memory have two new stops on their shopping lists, as leading memory vendors introduce maxed-out modules for gamers and overclockers. Both companies' parts feature integrated aluminum heat spreaders.

Kingston Technology Co. has added ultra-low-latency DDR400 (PC3200) to its HyperX lineup. The new 512MB modules ($179 each; a 1GB kit is $356) support latency timings of 2-2-2-5 (CAS Latency 2).

Meanwhile, Crucial Technology has launched a new Ballistix brand with 256MB and 512MB modules of both DDR and DDR-2. Quarter- and half-gigabyte sticks of DDR400 (CL 2-2-2-6) are priced at $75 and $139, respectively, with DDR500 (PC4000 CL 2.5-4-4-8) at $78 and $145. The 256MB and 512MB modules of DDR-2/533 (CL 3-3-3-10) are $119 and $229, respectively; their DDR-2/667 counterpatrs (CL 4-4-4-10) are $125 and $239.
