Business PCs Smarten Up With New Intel Core vPro CPUs
February 4, 2010

Computer manufacturers ranging from Acer, Asus, and HP to Dell, Toshiba, and Lenovo are rolling out business systems based on new Core i5 vPro and Core i7 vPro processors announced today by Intel Corp. Intel has also introduced a new Q57 Express desktop chipset and wired and wireless LAN adapters for vPro, its business platform that emphasizes security and manageability.

The dual- and quad-core processors are based on the same "Nehalem" architecture and 32-nanometer process engineering as previously announced Core i5 and i7 CPUs, with the same Turbo Boost Technology that adjusts the speed of each core based on workload and Hyper-Threading Technology that lets each core handle two instruction threads at once.

They add hardware-based security including Intel Anti-Theft Technology 2.0 that enables encryption solutions to disable access to cryptographic keys through hardware, completely blocking access to data, if a PC falls into the wrong hands. New Advanced Encryption Standard instructions speed up encryption and data compression, while Remote Encryption Management enables remote IT staff to unlock and manage PCs with encrypted hard drives. A PC Alarm Clock feature can wake a PC from off at a predetermined time to perform maintenance, security, and other tasks on its own.

New Keyboard-Video-Mouse Remote Control works with Intel integrated graphics to let IT administrators see users' displays and have full control of the PC, even if the operating system is unresponsive, with no need for external KVM appliances. vPro CPUs permit remote maintenance and management of PCs both inside and outside the corporate firewall, even when the PC is powered off or the OS is inoperative.

Small and medium businesses can check out a new line of notebooks, dubbed "Spring Peak," based on the 2010 Core CPU family and other Intel building blocks and supporting Intel Anti-Theft Technology, to be available from channel distributors. Today's announcements also include an entry-level workstation platform based on the Core i5 processor and Intel 3450 chipset; adopted by vendors including Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, and NEC, it's been certified on applications from Adobe, Autodesk, and others.
